New Panglima and the Fate of TNI Modernisation

Summary

On November 28, President Joko Widodo officially nominated the Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff (KASAL) Adm. Yudo Margono as a candidate to replace Gen. Andika Perkasa – who will retire – as the new Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander. The appointment of a general officer from the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has created hopes that the Indonesian military will proceed to naval capacity building. However, challenges such as budget constraints, the upcoming 2024 General Elections, a limited term, and the expectations to see M. Margono continuing reforms started under his predecessor might make it complicated for the new Panglima to impose his vision and strategy, while continuing to support the development of the national defence forces.
