Indonesian Strategic Autonomy and the Armed Forces’ Modernisation Plan

Summary

The crisis faced by Kyiv in obtaining weapons supply amidst the Russian invasion has prompted states to rethink their ideas of strategic autonomy amid the geopolitical uncertainties, including Indonesia. The country’s Law No. 16/2012 on Defence Industry is one of the ways to strengthen Indonesia’s strategic autonomy, particularly by maximising economic benefits from procurement deals through offset or Transfer of Technology (ToT) programmes.
