One Year After: Russian Military Aggression Against Ukraine and Its Impact on Indonesia’s Defence

One year after the beginning of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, the conflict continues to have a far reaching impact, including for Indonesia. The ongoing war waged by Russia not only affects the national economy, but also Indonesia’s defence posture. Western countries have implemented sanctions against Russia, including its defence sector, which has been a source of procurement, maintenance and upgrade for Indonesia’s defence equipment. Meanwhile, the efforts of numerous countries to provide Ukraine with defence equipment has led to bottlenecks or even shortages in the global market. Lastly, several countries’ lack of involvement and commitment towards Ukraine have raised concerns about their reliability as defence partner and/or supplier. Given the ongoing need for importation of defence equipment for Indonesia to meet its modernisation requirements, Jakarta should carefully assess and address these continuous challenges.
