Civil & Defence: Reaping Economic Benefits of Dual-Use Technology

As Indonesia is aiming high to advance its indigenous defence industry, the sector needs to give special attention to dual-use items that can be used to produce both civilian and military products as well as services. By doing this, the industry can expand its customer base, both domestic and international, beyond traditional defence procurement and improve its revenue streams. If done correctly, the emphasise on dual-use items could boost the defence industry’s contribution to the national economy. Nevertheless, there are a number of challenges that the government as well as industry stakeholders need to address to unlock this potential.
