The development of submarine technology is one of the ten priorities for Indonesia’s domestic defense industry set under Joko Widodo’s presidency. To achieve the target of mastering submarine technology, Alman Helvas Ali argued in his recent Op-Ed for CNBC Indonesia that Jakarta should review its policy to be based on science and technology. In this article, there are at least three aspects that Indonesia should consider to achieve its target: 1) the origin of submarine technology; 2) technology acquisition package (through license); and 3) maximising investment opportunities by selecting the best programs and cooperating with the best suppliers.
