DefenceSummary
In a recent article entitled “Indonesian Defence Industry: Bed of Roses or of Nails” and published by The Jakarta Post, our head of defence and research coordinator, Anastasia Febiola S., as well as our research analyst, Karl Gading Sayudha, took a closer look at the future of DEFEND ID and the industry as a whole. In 2022, DEFEND ID recorded a total of US$5.3 billion from on-hand contracts, a significant increase of 60% compared to the previous year. However, the road ahead is still uncertain, with the ongoing modernisation of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) presenting both opportunities and challenges. The article highlights the importance of carefully assessing prospects and making informed decisions to ensure that both transfer of technology and offsets benefit the industry in the long run. Meanwhile, the impact of the global economy, the upcoming 2024 general elections and the evolution of regional security context on Indonesia will also play a crucial role in determining the future of the Indonesian Defence Industry.
