Indonesia Needs More High-Performance Submarines Badly

DefenceSummary
In a recent article published by The Jakarta Post, our research analyst, Aji Widiatmaja, highlights that the “Indonesian Paper” highlighted Jakarta’s growing concerns regarding the emerging intention of countries in the Indo-Pacific to operate nuclear-powered submarines. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s current underwater capabilities are considered below requirements as Jakarta is not considering nuclear-powered submarines as part of its National Armed Forces modernisation plan. Taking into account Indonesia’s foreign policy as well as the current strategic environment, conventional diesel-electric submarine type can be seen as the remaining option, which come with two challenges such as which company will supply the submarines, and which technology to choose, either air-independent propulsion (AIP) or lithium-ion batteries.
