Discussing Indonesian Submarine Propulsion Technology
Categories :
DefenceSummary
In his recent article published by CNBC Indonesia, our defence expert, Alman Helvas Ali, highlights that currently, Indonesia is said to be considering Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) propulsion technology for its future submarines to meet the country’s Minimum Essential Forces (MEF) target until 2024. However, instead of AIP, M. Ali argues that lithium-ion battery – as currently used by Japan – is expected to become the new key technology for future submarines, especially due to its capability to increase the endurance of diesel electric submarines. While Indonesia has not decided on which types of submarines it would acquire, the procurement of such a strategic asset should not only be based on the current geopolitical concerns, but also on the benefits that Jakarta could obtain from the deal, including key technologies.
