Towards 2024 and TNI Post-MEF Modernisation: Opportunities and Challenges

Summary

As of 2021, around 62% of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI)’s Minimum Essential Forces (MEF) plan is said to have been achieved. With less than three years for the government to meet the goal by 2024, challenges such as global, regional, and domestic uncertainties might hamper the MEF plan. In addition, within the next few years, several of TNI’s major weapon systems will enter their retirement phase. In this perspective, the continuation of the MEF plan post-2024 or the implementation of a program to succeed it, is an essential question.
