The New Panglima: Golden Opportunities for TNI AL?

Summary

In a recent article published by Media Indonesia, our lead analyst for maritime security and counterterrorism, Andi Raihanah Ashar, as well as our research analyst, Amanda Shafira Callista, discussed the nomination of the Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff (KASAL), Adm. Yudo Margono, as the new commander of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). The appointment of M. Margono could pave the way for capacity building of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), especially in terms of budget allocation for procurement of defence equipments’ and modernisation of defence equipment. However, will M. Margono be able to maximise the TNI modernisation process while he will retire in November 2023 and face budget constraints and the upcoming 2024 General Election.
